Traveling this week to southwest Colorado. I made a stop in Gunnison earlier this week to shoot in the Crested Butte area and catch the end of Stage 2 of the USA Pro Tour Cycling Race. Now I'm in OURAY and drove up highway 62 west of Ridgway and took this photo on the way back from Telluride, along the Dallas Divide.
I had the opportunity to practice my pan shooting at the 30th Annual Rocky Mt. Regional Rodeo this past Saturday (July 14th) held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds near Golden, Colorado. The above photo was taken at 1/30th of a second. Movement of the rider separate from the horse in the saddle may explain why the center of the horse remained sharper than the rider himself.
Spent yesterday morning, photographing the 2nd Annual SONIC BOOM Criterium Bike Race sponsored by Lucky Pie Pizza in old downtown Louisville(Colorado). It was an opportunity to practice pan shooting as the riders went by to blur the background and try and keep the riders in focus..definitely made some progress on achieving this effect.
I just returned yesterday from attending the 9th Annual Moab Photo Symposium in Moab, Utah. There were 11 great worshops led by excellent instructors who were all highly regarded in their respective photography fields. Each gave inspiring presentations each morning about 'their story' and how they became passionate about their work.
The Friday May 4th workshop I took, was led by Dan Ballard which started in a small Moab city park where we were given 'assignments' on shooting 1) SIMPLE!, 2) SIMPLE with a 'LINE" and 3) SIMPLE with an "S" curve line in the image. We then headed for Dead Horse Point State Park to shoot along the cliff edge as the sun got low in the sky and brought color to the rocks.
On Saturday afternoon, I participated in a workshop led by local/national photographer Tom Till that took us to Arches National Park where we drove to the EYE OF THE WHALE Arch via four-wheel drive trail off the main park road. From there, we hiked a short distance and took turns shooting on the ledge through the 'eye' when sunlight began to light up the arches' ceiling.

I recently took my first "NIKONIAN'S" workshop on the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) with instructor Winston Hall. The class was a great 'hands-on' experience allowing me to use my camera and Nikon strobes to get a better understanding of how to use the CLS for making the best photos with added light.
